New Hope Helps Local Family Achieve Stability
By the time he enrolled in New Hope Early Learning Center in August 2022, Marcus, then less than 4 months old, had already had more than his share of challenges. He and his mother Alice had recently left an unsafe relationship, leaving the young mother and child just days from homelessness.
A local nurse referred Alice and Marcus to New Hope through a collaborative project involving IU Health’s Nurse Family Partnership and New Hope for Families. The project, known as Safety Nest, has served 131 local families, with a 91% housing success rate, since 2022.
“Our journey with New Hope started when my nurse referred us to New Hope for housing case management,” recalled Alice. “I had left a relationship that was not healthy with my son’s dad, and we didn’t have anywhere to be. We also were in a situation where, in order to continue working, I needed child care, and I needed it to be affordable and safe.”
Initially, Alice was nervous about leaving her baby with a stranger because the one other time she had entrusted Marcus’s care to a child care provider, he had been neglected. New Hope’s team took time to get to know the family and understand Alice’s very reasonable anxiety. Over weeks and months, Alice grew to trust her son’s teachers as much as he did.
Like 1 in 6 toddlers, Marcus was diagnosed with a developmental delay when he was a year old. Critically, New Hope’s highly qualified teaching team identified the deficit early on and worked closely with Alice to plan and implement an effective treatment program. As Alice remembers, “They took so much extra time and attention to make sure that he is fine now.” Marcus quickly overcame his developmental delay, and today is thriving in a public school classroom.
Following her work with a Family Housing Specialist at New Hope, Alice maintained a lease in her name for nearly four years, and in June 2026, Alice became a homeowner for the first time in her life. Today, Alice is employed by IU Health and works as an ambassador for Nurse Family Partnership, helping other young families as they each find and follow their path to stability.
“I’m so happy,” Alice concludes. “I cannot think of New Hope without smiling!”
